Mount Alexander Heritage Awards 2014 – Commendation
Location: Castlemaine, Victoria
Project type: Commercial/ Heritage
Status: Completed 2012
Castlemaine is located in the heart of the central gold fields and rich in Victorian architecture. The brief was to convert a Victorian double-fronted grocery store with seventies renovation, into a contemporary real estate agents’ offices. Using the Guildford general store as a model for Victorian proportion, joinery and detailing, the dowdy seventies façade was transformed into a Victorian-inspired shop front and a contemporary office space.
The building was converted from a single tenancy into two clearly defined and separate tenancies, each with their own entry. Heritage considerations had to be balanced with the demands of current building codes. The property was made compliant with current building codes for fire separation and wheelchair access.
